Air Jordan 4: history, design and sneaker culture

The Air Jordan 4 debuted in 1989 as the fourth generation of the line developed around Michael Jordan. Designed by Tinker Hatfield, it continues the path started with the Jordan 3 but introduces an immediately recognizable construction, characterized by mesh panels, lateral supports, lacing wings, and a structure designed to combine basketball performance with visual identity.

Within the Air Jordan family, the AJ4 has become one of the most important silhouettes both from a sporting perspective and within sneaker culture. The model was born between the Air Jordan 3 and the subsequent Air Jordan 5, but developed a language of its own from the very beginning.

Historic colorways, Retro versions, collaborations and contemporary reinterpretations have allowed the Jordan 4 to traverse very different periods without losing the elements that make its structure immediately recognizable.

Tinker Hatfield and the design of the Air Jordan 4

Tinker Hatfield developed the Jordan 4 after having already worked on the AJ3, maintaining some concepts from the previous generation but profoundly modifying its construction.

One of the most characteristic elements is the lateral mesh, inserted to visually and physically lighten the upper. The lateral structures and the wings connected to the lacing, on the other hand, allow for modifying the way the sneaker is tightened around the foot.

The Nike Air appears on the heel of OG configurations, an element that later returned on various Retro versions more closely linked to the model's heritage.

The Jordan 4 is also the first Air Jordan distributed on a global scale, a step that helped expand the line's presence beyond the US market.

The design of the AJ4 does not, therefore, represent just a technical evolution of the Jordan 3: it is one of the moments in which the Air Jordan line began to build an increasingly broader cultural presence.

Air Jordan 4 Retro and OG

A large part of the Jordan 4s available today belong to the Retro family, a term used to indicate reissues of the original silhouette.

A Jordan 4 Retro can bring a historic colorway back to the market or use the AJ4 construction as a base for a completely new color combination.

The term OG, abbreviation of “Original,” takes on particular importance when a release incorporates elements linked to the first configurations of the model, such as colorways, branding or historic details.

Not all Jordan 4 Retros are, therefore, identical. Shape, materials, heel branding, upper construction and other details can vary depending on the year and the specific release.

This relationship between archive and new production is one of the reasons why the Jordan 4 continues to be reinterpreted more than thirty years after its introduction.

Bred, White Cement and Military Blue

The original colorways played a fundamental role in building the identity of the Air Jordan 4.

Bred, also known through the Black/Cement combination, uses black, gray and red, creating one of the looks most closely associated with Michael Jordan's history.

White Cement, on the other hand, flips the color balance through a predominantly white base accompanied by black, red and Cement Grey details. It is one of the silhouette's most recognizable configurations and continues to return through new Retro versions.

Military Blue also belongs to the colorways historically linked to the AJ4 and uses a light base accompanied by the characteristic blue details.

The periodic return of these versions demonstrates how much contemporary Air Jordan 4s continue to maintain a direct relationship with their own archive.

Military Black, White Thunder and new colorways

Alongside historic configurations, the Jordan 4 has built an increasingly large catalog of new colorways in recent years.

Military Black takes up part of the color blocking associated with the Military family but replaces blue with black details, creating one of the most recognizable modern interpretations of the silhouette.

White Thunder instead uses the contrast between black and white within the language of the Jordan 4 Thunder, while other releases like Yellow Thunder, Red Cement, Midnight Navy and University Blue demonstrate how the same construction can change character through very different palettes.

These versions should not be confused with OG colorways: some start from historical references, others represent interpretations born much more recently.

Air Jordan 4 Black Cat

Among modern Jordan 4s, Black Cat occupies a special position.

The name takes up the “Black Cat” nickname associated with Michael Jordan and is applied to the AJ4 through an almost completely black construction. The first Jordan 4 Black Cat arrived in 2006, so it does not belong to the OG colorways of 1989.

The combination of nubuck, mesh and tone-on-tone components allows the sneaker to maintain depth while using an extremely limited palette.

The 2020 and 2025 versions brought the colorway back into the spotlight, but they present important differences in some details and in the branding.

The different generations are gathered in the section dedicated to the Air Jordan 4 Black Cat, maintained as a specific branch of the AJ4 family specifically to correctly distinguish the releases.

Frozen Moments and women's Jordan 4s

The Air Jordan 4 Frozen Moments represents one of the most recognizable examples of releases developed in women's sizing.

The sneaker uses a palette built primarily around neutral and gray tones, reinterpreting the AJ4 through materials and details different from the configurations more closely linked to the archive.

Its popularity also shows why the distinction between men's and women's Jordan 4s cannot be reduced simply to aesthetics.

Some releases are marketed in men's sizing, others in women's, and others still through GS or full family sizing ranges. The classification mainly indicates the size system and the way in which the sneaker is distributed, while many colorways are worn regardless of the audience for which they were originally launched.

Off-White and Air Jordan 4

The collaboration with Nike x Off-White represents one of the most important chapters of the contemporary Jordan 4.

Virgil Abloh uses the AJ4 within his own deconstructed language, keeping the sneaker's structure recognizable but reinterpreting materials, components and details.

The Air Jordan 4 Off-White Sail uses an almost monochromatic palette and semi-transparent materials that modify the perception of the different parts of the shoe without erasing the mesh, wings and typical proportions of the AJ4.

The result shows how much the Jordan 4 can function as a base for a highly characterized collaboration while continuing to keep the original design legible.

Travis Scott and Jordan 4 Cactus Jack

The relationship between Travis Scott and Jordan has also involved the Air Jordan 4.

The Jordan 4 Cactus Jack uses a University Blue shade accompanied by black and red details and branding linked to the rapper's universe.

The collaboration is important because it precedes some of the Jordan 1 interpretations that later became central to the relationship between Travis Scott and Jordan Brand.

On the AJ4, the project maintains the original structure of the silhouette almost entirely, using above all materials, palettes and branding to build an identity of its own.

A Ma Maniére, Union and KAWS

Other collaborations have shown very different interpretations of the Air Jordan 4.

A Ma Maniére has used refined materials and palettes to develop versions of the AJ4 linked to the Atlanta brand's language.

Union Los Angeles has instead modified some elements of the sneaker, also working on the tongue and using color combinations such as Guava Ice, Off Noir, Taupe Haze and Desert Moss.

KAWS brought the Jordan 4 towards an even different aesthetic, using suede and graphics linked to his own artistic universe.

These collaborations show how the wings, mesh and structure of the AJ4 can remain recognizable even when materials and details are profoundly reinterpreted.

The Nike Doernbecher program has also involved the Air Jordan 4, reinterpreting the silhouette through a project profoundly different from traditional collaborations and linked to the personal stories of the young designers involved in the Doernbecher Freestyle.

Nigel Sylvester and the evolution of the Jordan 4

The relationship between Nigel Sylvester and Jordan connects the Air Jordan 4 to the BMX world.

Projects like Brick by Brick use the AJ4 as a base to tell the story of the relationship between the rider, New York and a culture in which sneakers are actually used and marked by movement.

The same relationship also led to the development of the Jordan 4 RM, a reinterpretation that starts from elements of the AJ4 family but uses a different construction.

Nigel Sylvester's journey demonstrates how the identity of the Jordan 4 continues to evolve even through languages that are born far from professional basketball.

Air Jordan 4 Player Exclusive and collector's models

Among the rarest Air Jordan 4s are the Air Jordan Player Exclusive (PE), versions developed for athletes, teams and university programs and normally not intended for retail distribution.

Over the years, Player Exclusive, Friends & Family, samples and versions dedicated to specific teams, athletes or occasions have been produced. Some of these sneakers are made in extremely limited quantities and can reach levels of rarity much higher than normal Retros.

The acronym PE, abbreviation for Player Exclusive, generally identifies versions created for specific athletes or contexts and does not automatically imply commercial distribution.

Florida Gators, Oklahoma Sooners, Wahlburger and other Jordan 4 PEs show how important the silhouette is even in the most extreme collecting.

These productions can fall into the world of Sneakers Grail, where rarity, provenance and the history of the single release take on central weight.

Original Air Jordan 4 and pre-owned market

The popularity of the Jordan 4 and the value reached by Black Cat, collaborations, PEs and other particularly sought-after releases make authenticity a fundamental element.

Materials, mesh, wings, upper shape, heel branding, tongue, product codes, labels, packaging and accessories can change significantly between one release and another.

On ResellZone, every product undergoes the verification process provided to check its authenticity and correspondence with the specific version. The method used is detailed on the page dedicated to product authenticity.

Releases from the secondhand market are instead organized in the Used Air Jordan 4 section, dedicated to pre-owned models and separated from the main hierarchy of new releases.
