Air Jordan 1 High: The Origins of the Jordan 1

The Air Jordan 1 High represents the construction most closely tied to the silhouette that gave birth to the Jordan story. The design of the first AJ1 was born in the eighties around Michael Jordan and still retains some of the most recognizable elements of the sneaker today: overlapping panel uppers, a lateral Swoosh, the Wings Logo on the collar, and a high-top structure.

Within the Air Jordan 1 family, the High therefore occupies a unique position. It is the format most connected to the model's historical archive and the one that has seen the return of many of the most important colorways in Air Jordan history.

Over time, the silhouette has been re-proposed through Retro High OG versions, new color interpretations, and collaborations that have modified materials and details without erasing the identity of the original sneaker.

Air Jordan 1 High, Mid, and Low: The Differences

High, Mid, and Low share the aesthetic language of the Jordan 1, but represent three different constructions.

The Air Jordan 1 High uses a high profile around the ankle and, especially in the Retro High OG versions, maintains a particularly direct relationship with the proportions and branding of the historical configurations.

The Air Jordan 1 Mid, on the other hand, features an intermediate cut and develops its own range of colorways, materials, and details. It is not simply a shortened High: proportions, tongue, branding, and construction can differ.

Finally, the Air Jordan 1 Low brings the same identity to a low-top silhouette and includes both standard and Low OG versions.

These differences allow the three variants to share the Jordan 1 aesthetic without completely overlapping in terms of construction and history.

Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG and High OG

The Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG designation is one of the most important within the High family.

The term Retro indicates the return of a silhouette from the past, while OG, an abbreviation for "Original," underscores the release's relationship with the model's historical elements.

In Jordan 1 Highs, the Retro High OG designation is used for releases that maintain a particularly evident link with the identity of the first AJ1 through proportions, branding, and details inspired by the original configurations.

Therefore, not all Air Jordan 1 Highs are identical. Materials, shape, tongues, branding, and construction can change depending on the year of production and the specific release.

The distinction is also important to understand why terms like Jordan 1 High, High OG, and Retro High OG can coexist within the same family without necessarily identifying three separate silhouettes.

Chicago, Bred, Royal, and the Historical Colorways

A fundamental part of the history of the Air Jordan 1 High is told through its colorways.

Chicago has become one of the most recognizable color references in the entire Jordan universe thanks to the combination of white, red, and black tied to the Chicago Bulls.

Other configurations such as Bred, Black Toe, Royal, Shadow, and UNC have helped build the visual language of the Jordan 1 and continue to be revisited through Retros and new reinterpretations.

The relationship with the archive is also evident in releases like the Lost & Found, which reinterprets the imagery of the Chicago through materials and finishes designed to recall the look of a sneaker preserved for years.

These colorways are not simply aesthetic variations: they have become references through which Jordan continues to tell and reinterpret the history of the silhouette.

Off-White and Air Jordan 1 High

The collaboration with Nike x Off-White represents one of the most important chapters in the contemporary history of the Jordan 1 High.

Virgil Abloh used the silhouette as a base for a deconstructed language in which stitching, materials, technical text, and normally hidden components become intentionally visible.

The Chicago, White, and University Blue interpretations kept the identity of the AJ1 High recognizable while profoundly transforming its aesthetic reading.

The relationship between Virgil Abloh's work and the silhouette also continues through the Virgil Abloh Archive. An example is the Air Jordan 1 High OG “Alaska”, a project that revisits the deconstructed language associated with the designer through a new interpretation of the Jordan 1 High.

This continuity shows how much the AJ1 High has become a platform capable of connecting the Jordan archive, contemporary design, and sneaker culture.

Union LA, Fragment Design, and Air Jordan 1 High

Union Los Angeles and Fragment Design have built interpretations of the Jordan 1 High that are very different from those of Off-White.

Union worked on the concept of reconstructing the sneaker, combining elements and references from different versions of the Jordan 1. Fragment Design, meanwhile, developed a recognizable language through essential palettes, dedicated branding, and the characteristic lightning logo.

These paths meet in the Air Jordan 1 High x Union LA x Fragment Design, a project that brings together Jordan, Union, and Fragment identities on the same silhouette.

The collaboration shows how a sneaker tied to the eighties can continue to be reinterpreted through contemporary references without losing the structure that makes a Jordan 1 High immediately recognizable.

Travis Scott and the Jordan 1 High

Travis Scott and Jordan also used the Air Jordan 1 High as a starting point for one of the most recognizable collaborations of recent years.

The oversized Reverse Swoosh modified one of the most familiar elements of the silhouette, while materials, brown tones, and Cactus Jack branding built an identity distinct from traditional Jordan 1s.

The project on the High also anticipated a language that would become particularly important on subsequent Air Jordan 1 Low Travis Scotts.

The collaboration therefore represents a bridge between the two branches of the Jordan 1 and shows how the same graphic element can be adapted to different proportions.

Men's and Women's Air Jordan 1 High

Men's and Women's Jordan 1 Highs are produced through different size ranges and releases.

Some colorways are launched in Men's sizing, others in Women's, while numerous releases are also made in GS versions dedicated to smaller sizes.

The Men's or Women's classification primarily concerns the range of sizes in which a sneaker is marketed and does not automatically change the silhouette's identity.

Materials and construction can change between one release and another, especially when comparing productions belonging to different periods or special versions linked to collaborations.

Original Air Jordan 1 High and the Pre-owned Market

The quantity of Retros, historical colorways, and collaborations makes authenticity particularly important in the Air Jordan 1 High market.

Materials, Wings Logo, Swoosh, labels, stitching, product codes, and packaging can change between one release and another and must therefore be evaluated by considering the specific characteristics of the model.

On ResellZone, every product undergoes the verification process provided to check its authenticity and correspondence with the original release. The method used is detailed on the page dedicated to product authenticity.

Jordan 1s from the second-hand market are organized in the Pre-owned Air Jordan 1 section, dedicated to pre-owned models and separated from the main High, Mid, and Low structure.
